5+1 vs 4+2 Psychology Pathway: Which Should You Choose?

Australia has two main pathways to general registration as a psychologist that involve supervised practice after undergraduate study: the 5+1 program and the 4+2 (sixth-year) program. They have different entry requirements, different supervision structures, and different implications for specialist endorsement. This guide compares them directly so you can make an informed choice.

The two pathways at a glance

Both pathways lead to general registration as a psychologist with AHPRA and are governed by the Psychology Board of Australia. The fundamental difference is in where supervised practice sits relative to postgraduate academic study.

  • 5+1 pathway: five years of APAC-accredited undergraduate and honours-level study, followed by one year (minimum 44 weeks full-time equivalent) of supervised practice in employment. The supervised practice is arranged independently — you find your own placement and supervisor.
  • 4+2 pathway: four years of undergraduate study, followed by two years of a Psychology Board-approved, APAC-accredited postgraduate program (typically a Master's or Doctoral degree). Supervised practice is integrated into the academic program, coordinated by the university.

Entry requirements: where each pathway starts from

The 5+1 pathway is accessible after completing four years of APAC-accredited psychology undergraduate study (three-year bachelor's plus honours, or equivalent). Graduates apply directly to AHPRA for provisional registration and must then secure a supervised practice placement.

The 4+2 pathway requires admission into a Psychology Board-approved postgraduate program. These programs — Master of Professional Psychology, Master of Clinical Psychology, doctoral programs — are university-based, competitive, and limited in places. Entry typically requires at least a credit average in honours, and some programs require relevant prior experience or satisfy clinical aptitude requirements.

Duration: how long does each take?

The 5+1 pathway is shorter on paper. The supervised practice component is one year, and a full-time candidate who secures a position promptly can apply for general registration inside eighteen months from honours graduation. However, finding a suitable supervised practice position can take time — particularly in regional areas or competitive metropolitan markets.

The 4+2 pathway adds at minimum two full years of postgraduate study after the four undergraduate years — taking the total to at least six years from commencing undergraduate psychology to eligibility for general registration. However, the supervised practice component is built into the coursework, so there is less of the logistical uncertainty that comes with arranging a placement independently.

Supervision structure: key differences

In the 5+1 program, you are responsible for finding your own supervised practice position. Your employer (or an independently contracted supervisor) provides supervision that must meet the Psychology Board's requirements. The quality and structure of supervision depends heavily on the individual supervisor you secure.

In the 4+2 program, supervision is structured and overseen by the university. Placement settings are coordinated through the academic program, and supervisors are vetted by the university against Psychology Board and APAC requirements. This provides more institutional scaffolding — which some find reassuring and others find constraining.

The specialist endorsement question

This is the most career-consequential difference between the two pathways. The Psychology Board of Australia offers area of practice endorsement in specialised areas including clinical psychology, educational and developmental psychology, forensic psychology, health psychology, neuropsychology, and others.

Most endorsements require completion of an APAC-accredited postgraduate qualification in the specific specialty. As a result, 5+1 graduates who want specialist endorsement will need further postgraduate study after achieving general registration. Some 4+2 pathways — particularly those in clinical, neuropsychological, or forensic specialties — are structured so that graduates can apply for the relevant endorsement on completion of the program.

If you already know you want to work in clinical, forensic, or neuropsychology, research whether the 4+2 programs at your target universities are actually APAC-accredited for the relevant area of practice endorsement — not all postgraduate psychology programs lead directly to endorsement eligibility.

Financial considerations

The 5+1 pathway is generally more financially advantageous in the short term. The supervised practice year is paid employment. Completing it full-time and achieving general registration typically involves only one year of below-registered-psychologist wages, plus standard undergraduate HECS debt.

The 4+2 pathway typically involves two to three years of combined study fees (often significant HECS-HELP debt for a postgraduate degree) alongside lower income during placement periods integrated into coursework. Against this, endorsed 4+2 graduates in private practice — particularly clinical and neuropsychology — may command higher fees over a career.

How to decide

For most graduates, the decision is shaped as much by access as by preference. 4+2 programs are highly competitive and limited in capacity. Many capable graduates do not gain entry to their preferred program and proceed via the 5+1 — sometimes returning for postgraduate study after achieving general registration.

If you have a clear specialty vision and a competitive academic record, pursue a relevant 4+2 program. If you are undecided, want to begin earning quickly, or did not gain access to a suitable postgraduate program, the 5+1 pathway is a well-structured, completely valid route to general registration that serves the large majority of Australia's registered psychologists.
